Theoretical Approach to Counseling
Although I integrate theories, my foundation for counseling is person-centered. Recent science suggests that the internal thought environment has puissant impacts on physical health. With effective counseling, measurable biological improvements can be made.
Research has shown that effective counseling involves an empathically attuned relationship for optimal for neuroplasticity. Empathic attunement combines Carl Rogers' first element, or core condition of counseling; congruence, with his third element; empathic understanding. Empathic attunement can only occur in an environment of unconditional positive regard, Rogers' second core condition for counseling.
The graphs below depict my perspective at the point people realize they need counseling and also the way I integrate counseling theories to meet each person at the appropriate developmental level as they are on their journey toward change.
